synthesis - Saving $500 Billion/Year - a notre sante

SEATTLE, Jan. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was published on January 20, 2011, by Shafeen Charania, author of the synthesis blog, winner of the 2008 Weblog award for best new blog, and Time.com's 25 best blogs of 2009.

The health care debate rages in America, one side believes the Health Care Reform Act is a job killer and wishes to repeal it, the other believes it is a social imperative and wishes to strengthen it. It's time for President Obama to put an economic stake in the ground.

More than 14.5 million children in America live in poverty, more than 16.7 million don't have enough food to eat. Children who grow up like this are most likely to be burdens to the state - due to increased health care costs, likelihood to commit crimes, and lost economic productivity and income taxes. The cost is an astounding $500 billion per year!

Ignoring the moral obligation to take millions of American children out of poverty and soup kitchens, President Obama should tout the benefit of investing in their health and wellbeing, and capture $500 billion per year in savings.
