St. Thomas University Expands Curricula and Scientific Research

MIAMI, Jan. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- St. Thomas University has expanded its schools' curricula to address adult learners' and high-potential science students' needs. Honing student leadership skills, the School of Science, Technology and Engineering Management is one of the few to offer undergraduate research in state-of-the-art labs guided by faculty with publishing experience. One way the Hispanic community in South Florida has been significantly impacted is its Science Fellows Program, which provides funding to qualified minority students in science and math, areas with highly projected job openings.

Other new initiatives bring much needed encouragement to Florida teachers looking to advance in the state's public and private school systems. A new M.S. in Elementary Education is now offered online to benefit those facing full-time jobs and after-five family pressure. The courses include "Content and Methods for Teaching Language Arts", which provides added insight and specialization to thousands of teachers and teaching assistants who deal with South Florida's diverse populations. For those already in school administration who are looking for a doctoral level degree with a minimum timeframe to complete the title, there is also the Ed D in Educational Leadership while the M.S., Education with a concentration in Instructional Technology aligns its curriculum to the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers and is competitive with the country's top IT programs.

"An Honors Program, scientific research, intercultural human rights degrees, United Nations internships in global studies, social justice programs that focus on crucial issues, are all integrated in our leadership building vision. And as a regionally-accredited institution, St. Thomas University's education degrees provide professionals one of the credentials needed to receive a teaching certificate in a particular state", said Marivi Prado, Chief Marketing Officer for St. Thomas University.

"We are also offering unique programs in Fire Science, Electronic Media, and Art Management. This graduate-level program has been steadily growing in enrollment as Greater Miami's art scene has been increasing its presence, as it is evident in most recent international art fairs of global prestige. Few universities provide a specialization in art as a business, needed by entrepreneurs in art galleries, museum and other cultural or public service institutions. The curriculum concentrates in the economy of art, its marketing, legal aspects, production, financing and fundraising."

St. Thomas' Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Executive Management synthesizes cutting-edge concepts and the student's professional experiences, serving the working adult who wish to advance their careers. The degree is geared to employees who hold managerial, executive and other leadership positions in industry, government and non-profit organizations. Students gain first-hand knowledge of current practices and trends using a mixture of theory and practice. Most of the curriculum is online and the program represents a fast-track way to advancement that can be achieved within an 18-month timeframe.
