PSI Media Launches Integrating-Renewables.org
LAS VEGAS, Dec. 7, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Intermittent renewables--wind and solar--are positioned by state Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) to become a "game-changer" in terms of grid operation and generation asset management. Depending on RPS, grid, and market specifics, some sections of the country could face electric system reliability issues within a year or two.
This was one conclusion of technical experts participating in a special workshop, "Integrating Renewables Into the Generation Mix: Challenges and Unknowns," presented in mid September by Combustion Turbine Operations Task Force (CTOTF), an industry group, in cooperation with NV Energy, Nevada's largest regulated electric utility. A 36-page special report on the meeting was prepared by Las Vegas-based PSI Media Inc. and distributed internationally at the end of November.
Electricity industry experts agree that over time, strategies and tactics for dealing with intermittency and other idiosyncrasies of the new energy resources will emerge. But as in any transition, developing the solutions required will be challenging and time consuming and some reliability issues are likely in the meantime. To facilitate the industry's transition to the new paradigm, PSI Media is launching Integrating-Renewables.org.
The new site will allow power generators and grid companies to share ideas, experiences, and best practices through several discussion forums--including grid operations, smart grid/DSM, O&M impacts on conventional generation, and energy storage. Admittance to the forums is restricted to industry professionals; registration at the website is required for password-protected access.
The website also will offer relevant reports, industry news, regulatory update, white papers, case histories, etc. PSI Media is best known for its specialty energy handbooks and the quarterly Combined Cycle Journal.
