Nomad Editions Poised to Invent New Media Model for Mobile; Adds Award-Winning Veteran Photo Editor Laurie Kratochvil to Staff

First-of-their-kind digital weekly publications for iPhone, iPad and other mobile devices continue to build momentum in advance of launch; company adds veteran photo editor to roster of leading journalists.

NEW YORK, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Nomad Editions, a first-of-its-kind media company that will be producing digital weekly publications designed exclusively for mobile devices such as the iPhone, iPad and other platforms, today announced the appointment of Laurie Kratochvil to the position of Director of Photography. Kratochvil is one of America's most respected Photo Editors, with an illustrious career spanning three decades and dozens of the most prestigious media outlets throughout the world.

"We are delighted to have Laurie Kratochvil join the Nomad Editions team," said Mark Edmiston, CEO of Nomad Editions and past president of Newsweek and chairman of the Magazine Publishers of America. "Over a distinguished career at Rolling Stone, InStyle and other major organizations, Laurie has made a huge impact on the media landscape. Nomad Editions is determined to have the finest visual content along with the best stories and she will help us to realize that goal."

Kratochvil began her career at the Los Angeles Times as a photography editor and went on to work for numerous national publications before joining Rolling Stone Magazine in 1982. During her twelve years there as photo editor, Kratochvil saw the magazine win every major photography award including the National Magazine Award.

While working for Rolling Stone, Kratochvil edited a number of books, including the New York Times best seller, Rolling Stone: The Photographs. She has curated several photography exhibitions in the United States and Europe: she has been a frequent panelist and lecturer, and has judged numerous photography competitions.

"I am excited by the new media form being invented at Nomad Editions," said Kratochvil. "This is a great management team with an idea that can reshape the media landscape. I am looking forward to working with designer Roger Black, Editor-in-Chief John Benditt and the rest of the Nomad Editions team. The Nomad Editions digital weeklies offer new formats for the most compelling visual material."

Kratochvil was also the founding photography editor for In Style Magazine and worked there until 2005 before leaving to start her own visual consulting business, working with consumer magazines such as Self, O the Oprah Magazine, Bloomberg Personal, Men's Journal and Essence. In 2009 she was hired by Reader's Digest Development to consult on new titles as well as the magazine's international editions.

Kratochvil's book projects include Africa by Herb Ritts, CUBA-Picturing Change by E. Wright Ledbetter, Mil Besos by Ruven Afanador, and Cyclops by Albert Watson, as well as Watson's two-volume book on Las Vegas that will be published in the fall of 2010.

Kratochvil is a board member of The Society of Publication Design, a jury member of World Press, and a faculty member in the continuing education program at The International Center for Photography. A native of Newport Beach, California, Kratochvil lives in New York City and Southold, New York.

"Laurie Kratochvil is one of the finest photo editors in the country," said Nomad Editions Design Director Roger Black. "We see new opportunities for telling stories with pictures at Nomad Editions and Laurie will help us make the most of it."

The first Nomad Editions digital weeklies expected to begin publication are:

Wave Lines: Your Brain on Surfing (Jon Cohen, editor)
Real Eats: Stories Behind the Food (Sean Elder, editor)
Wide Screen: Inside the Movies That Matter (Glenn Kenny, editor)

Each Nomad Edition will focus on a specific subject, bringing to bear terrific writing, great pictures as well as audio and video. Each weekly issue will contain enough material for a typical reader to be engaged with it for 20-30 minutes. One of Nomad Editions' key innovations lies in the creation of a new form--not a magazine, nor a website, but a digital publication specifically designed to take advantage of the aesthetic and narrative pleasures of the former while applying the mobility and rich multimedia capabilities of the latter.
