Fragmentation Prevention: End the Waiting

BURBANK, Calif., Aug. 11 -- One of the great advantages that computers brought to the corporate world was the speed of access.  In the old days, a file containing documents would have to be retrieved from some distance away, by a human. Depending on the system employed by the company, it might take hours or even days. Returning that file would take the same amount of time (hopefully nobody else needed it in the meantime).

But as we know now, speed of access can also be greatly slowed down on computers. File fragmentation is a prime cause of this slow access--a situation that could be likened to parts of a physical file, in previous times, being scattered from one end of the office to the other and having to be gathered together every time the file was needed.

There are numerous solutions for the addressing of file fragmentation--but today, such a solution must be robust enough to stand up to extremely busy computing environments and higher-than-ever fragmentation levels. Most sites choose to prevent a majority of fragmentation before it happens--with DiskeeperĀ® performance software.

"Our primary problem was fragmentation within our Document Management System," said Gene Goroschko, Vice President for Information Systems at Physicians Endoscopy in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. "After installing Diskeeper, we were shocked to see how much fragmentation Diskeeper reported. Our search and retrieval speed doubled, and our users think that our Document Management System is as fast now as it was when we originally deployed it."

Utilizing a new revolutionary technology called IntelliWrite(TM) fragmentation prevention, Diskeeper 2010 intelligently writes files to the disk to prevent up to 95 percent of fragmentation from occurring. Coupled with Diskeeper's superior defragmentation technology, Diskeeper 2010 delivers a complete performance solution for every Windows system at every site, and goes far beyond what defragmentation alone can achieve. Significant savings are also achieved reducing energy consumption and cooling--even more than is done with conventional defragmentation.

"Prior to using Diskeeper, our document access was starting to suffer and users were complaining about the search and retrieval speeds," Goroschko explained. "SQL optimizations and scheduled disk defrags did not offer much of an improvement. The system is hosted across two servers; the first is the application server and second is a SQL database. We intake about 400 documents a day and maintain a store of over 800,000 documents."

With Diskeeper, file fragmentation is made a thing of the past, and native system speed and reliability are restored. Best of all, the waiting is over.

"In our opinion, Diskeeper was one of the best investments we have made," Goroschko concluded.
